STIJEPO GLEĐ MARKOS

The internationally acclaimed Croatian tenor from Dubrovnik launched his musical career on the theater stage, where leading roles in musicals provided him with significant experience and great success. After performing in hundreds of shows as a member of the Marin Držić Theatre in Dubrovnik, he continued his collaborations with the Zagreb City Theatre Komedija. His musical education began under the tutelage of opera prima donna and vocal coach Stojan Stojanov Gančev in Zagreb.

He has also achieved considerable success in pop music, winning first places and awards at numerous solo performances and festivals, such as the Grand Prix at "Zagrebfest", "Songs of the Mediterranean", "Šibenik Chanson", and many others. A major breakthrough in his international career came in London in 2012, when he was chosen for the lead role of Mario Cavaradossi in the opera "Tosca". His powerful stage presence and clear voice were recognized by the Royal Opera House, which recommended him for a British music scholarship, and he continued his further development with one of Britain's most renowned tenors, Ryland Davies, a globally celebrated vocal coach and professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

In 2014, back in Dubrovnik, he initiated the international cultural "Festival Sentimento" with the aim of using music for the rehabilitation of people with special needs. The festival annually hosts global musical talents and renowned orchestras such as the Brodsky String Quartet, Claire McCaldin from the Royal Opera House, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, Prof. Nigel Osborne, Prof. Vladimir Babin, and many others. Festival Sentimento has become an internationally recognized music festival, broadcast seven times on Croatian Radio Television and on many local TV channels.

From the Festival Sentimento, which has become a traditional event within Dubrovnik's cultural and artistic program since 2014, the music education and rehabilitation project "Unison World" was born, bringing the benefits of music to the most vulnerable groups in society. As part of the music workshops he conducts with these groups, Stijepo has also established 6 choirs within institutions and 1 Unison choir that operates outside of institutions, connecting users of homes with the citizens of Dubrovnik.

In his professional career, he has been a member of theater and orchestral ensembles, performing as a soloist, tenor. In 2021, he released his debut album of spiritual music titled "My Rock," which has garnered significant attention from the industry and audiences. With its authentic musical expression, it achieved the recognition of a silver record in less than a year after its release.

Goran Pelaic, Music Critic and Publicist

For the past forty years I have kept track of the Croatian music scene and with pride I can say that Croatia has never had a singer with a voice which has such a volume, coloration, or sentiment. Stijepo Gled Markos is a world class tenor who comes from Dubrovnik, the pearl of Mediterranean and the city of troubadours on the south of Dalmatia, which treasured special singing coloration throughout the history. His performance qualities and emotions are probably part of this inherited code, although as a singer he particularly worked on interpretation. His ability to balance emotions within a song and give that special touch to the interpretation is an amazing talent which only supreme interpreters have.

As a music critic I would describe him as a spinto tenor with naturally acquired squillo and a beautiful vocal coloration. He has a large vocal range and volume, refine feeling for legato and the music phrase, as well as a beautiful charismatic stage presence. As a music lover I would say that this is one extraordinary singing personality who is able to seize everyone with his splendid interpretations. He is a singer for the world stage. As a person he is extremely modest and as an artist he glows with splendour.

This great musician has proved his talent in Croatia by winning numerous festivals, actually I was program director of one of the biggest and most respectful music festivals in Croatia, when I met Markos. According to my judgment, as well as the judgment of those who were able to hear him, he was the great and most pleasant surprise. After this there was not one major festival in Croatia that he didn’t win. At the oldest European music festival Zagrebfest in 2007 he won the Grand Prix award, in 2008 he won the first prize on international Mediterranean festival, he won Sibenik festival in 2009, following festivals in Split, Opatija and Dubrovnik. He made his country proud with each award he won on international festivals, but I knew that he has the voice for the world stage.

With his charismatic performances he seized attention of the audience and accomplished magnificent entrance into the music scene already in the early stage of his career. His natural singing and acting talent, and unique vocal coloration made him the best choice for leading roles in theatres Marin Drzic in Dubrovnik and Komedija in the capital of Croatia. He played hundreds of performances where he practiced and perfected his artistry in vocal training with former leader soloist of Croatian National Opera Stojan Stojanov Gancev.

In 2013 his talent was noticed at the audition for The New London Opera Players Production in the opera Tosca when Markos was chosen for the leading role and became the new Mario Cavaradossi.

Very soon his enormous talent was also noticed by directors from the Royal Opera House in London and by their direction Markos has received a British music scolarship. Markos is currently working with tenor Ryland Davies from The Royal Academy of Music London. Ryland Davies is considered one of the best vocal teacher and the most beautiful voice of all time in the UK. It was confirmed, Croatia does have a tenor for the world stage!

The power of music brings together all music lovers, regardless of their origins. As a true music ambassador Markos collaborates with many internationally acclaimed musicians, performing to the world audience while proudly representing his country Croatia.
