STIJEPO GLEĐ MARKOS
Stijepo Gleđ Markos (born on November 10, 1980, in Dubrovnik, Croatia) is an internationally recognized Croatian tenor with a rich and versatile career in both classical and contemporary music. He began his artistic journey in the theater, performing leading roles in musicals at the Marin Držić Theatre in Dubrovnik, where he gained significant stage experience and public acclaim. His theatrical success led to collaborations with the Komedija Theatre in Zagreb, further establishing his presence in the Croatian performing arts scene.
Markos refined his vocal technique under the guidance of Stojan Stojanov Gančev, a renowned operatic tenor and vocal coach. His breakthrough in the international music scene came in 2012, when he was cast as Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's opera Tosca in London. His commanding stage presence and distinctive voice caught the attention of the Royal Opera House, which recommended him for a British music scholarship. He continued his studies under Ryland Davies, one of the most respected vocal pedagogues at the Royal Academy of Music.
In 2014, Markos founded the Sentimento International Music Festival in Dubrovnik, a unique cultural project that uses music as a form of therapy for people with special needs. Over the years, the festival has hosted world-class musicians and ensembles, including the Brodsky String Quartet, Claire McCaldin from the Royal Opera House, and the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. The festival has been broadcast multiple times on Croatian National Television (HRT), gaining recognition as one of the most significant cultural events in the region.
Building on the success of the Sentimento Festival, Markos launched the Unison World Project, a music education and rehabilitation initiative that brings the healing power of music to the most vulnerable groups in society. Through this project, he established six choirs within institutions and founded the Unison Choir, which connects users of social care institutions with the broader community in Dubrovnik.
Markos’s artistic career spans various genres, from classical opera and musical theater to contemporary Christian music. He has performed as a soloist with numerous Croatian and international orchestras, working with renowned conductors such as Alan Bjelinski, Marc Tardue, and Tomislav Fačini. He has also collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and participated in productions with The New London Opera Players.
In 2021, he released his debut album of spiritual music, "Moja Hridino" (My Rock), which received widespread acclaim for its authentic and heartfelt musical expression. The album quickly achieved silver certification, marking a significant milestone in his career.
In 2024, Markos released two new albums. The first, "Noć u Betlehemu" (Night in Bethlehem), is a Christmas album featuring traditional Croatian carols in contemporary arrangements. The album was premiered at a Christmas concert in Zagreb and received positive feedback from both audiences and critics. His second album of the year, "Pred Presvetim" (Before the Blessed Sacrament), is a meditative Christian album that invites listeners to spiritual reflection through music inspired by the tradition of Eucharistic adoration. The album blends traditional sacred themes with modern arrangements, creating an intimate atmosphere for prayer and introspection.
In addition to his recording and performing career, Markos is an active composer. His compositions have been registered with the Croatian Composers' Society (HDS) and have been performed by orchestras across Croatia. He continues to serve as a soloist with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, performing a diverse repertoire that includes classical, film, and musical theater music.
Markos remains dedicated to his mission of using music as a tool for spiritual enrichment and social inclusion, bringing meaningful cultural contributions to both his local community and international audiences.
Goran Pelaic, Music Critic and Publicist
For the past forty years I have kept track of the Croatian music scene and with pride I can say that Croatia has never had a singer with a voice which has such a volume, coloration, or sentiment. Stijepo Gled Markos is a world class tenor who comes from Dubrovnik, the pearl of Mediterranean and the city of troubadours on the south of Dalmatia, which treasured special singing coloration throughout the history. His performance qualities and emotions are probably part of this inherited code, although as a singer he particularly worked on interpretation. His ability to balance emotions within a song and give that special touch to the interpretation is an amazing talent which only supreme interpreters have.
As a music critic I would describe him as a spinto tenor with naturally acquired squillo and a beautiful vocal coloration. He has a large vocal range and volume, refine feeling for legato and the music phrase, as well as a beautiful charismatic stage presence. As a music lover I would say that this is one extraordinary singing personality who is able to seize everyone with his splendid interpretations. He is a singer for the world stage. As a person he is extremely modest and as an artist he glows with splendour.
This great musician has proved his talent in Croatia by winning numerous festivals, actually I was program director of one of the biggest and most respectful music festivals in Croatia, when I met Markos. According to my judgment, as well as the judgment of those who were able to hear him, he was the great and most pleasant surprise. After this there was not one major festival in Croatia that he didn’t win. At the oldest European music festival Zagrebfest in 2007 he won the Grand Prix award, in 2008 he won the first prize on international Mediterranean festival, he won Sibenik festival in 2009, following festivals in Split, Opatija and Dubrovnik. He made his country proud with each award he won on international festivals, but I knew that he has the voice for the world stage.
With his charismatic performances he seized attention of the audience and accomplished magnificent entrance into the music scene already in the early stage of his career. His natural singing and acting talent, and unique vocal coloration made him the best choice for leading roles in theatres Marin Drzic in Dubrovnik and Komedija in the capital of Croatia. He played hundreds of performances where he practiced and perfected his artistry in vocal training with former leader soloist of Croatian National Opera Stojan Stojanov Gancev.
In 2013 his talent was noticed at the audition for The New London Opera Players Production in the opera Tosca when Markos was chosen for the leading role and became the new Mario Cavaradossi.
Very soon his enormous talent was also noticed by directors from the Royal Opera House in London and by their direction Markos has received a British music scolarship. Markos is currently working with tenor Ryland Davies from The Royal Academy of Music London. Ryland Davies is considered one of the best vocal teacher and the most beautiful voice of all time in the UK. It was confirmed, Croatia does have a tenor for the world stage!
The power of music brings together all music lovers, regardless of their origins. As a true music ambassador Markos collaborates with many internationally acclaimed musicians, performing to the world audience while proudly representing his country Croatia.
